the king of pumpkins

it’s pumpkin season and if you want to enjoy it at its best you need to track down one of these dusky grey-green beauties – ignore the more usual large orange skinned pumpkins.

this is a crown prince pumpkin. it has a texture similar to butternut squash – dense and smooth in texture. it’s flavour is rich and almost chestnut-like.

it is unlike any other pumpkin and my absolute favourite. you must try it, if you haven’t already.

Yes indeed, the Crown Prince is the king of pumpkins - but I suspect it isn't the absolute best for texture and flavour. I fancy that on those scores it's trumped by the Kabocha. On our veggie plot, though, the damn squirrels bit into Kabochas (which have thinner skin) and had to leave the CP alone because its skin is so tough. So I suspect I'll be growing only CPs next year.

i'll have to look into kabochas - i'bve had green pumpkins which looked very similar but don't remember the flavour - i wonder if it was something else. thanks for the tip lillyanne.
