roasted sweet potato salad with blue cheese

over the past week or so the weather in london has started to turn. i’m not ready to use the “a” word but there is a definite nip in the air and warm snugly clothes are looking more appealing than my summer sandals.

this means i’m starting to change what i want to eat, although i’m not ready to succumb to stews and bakes. this roasted sweet potato salad is a good half-way house, with the slightly caramelised pepper and potato hinting at the warming foods which will be appearing in the coming months, while the salad keeps things light.

asian sweet potato soup

my chilli and ginger sweet potato soup is one of the recipes on this blog that people have consistently tried since i originally made it back in 2006.

this week i fancied revisiting it but, having not been very well recently i wanted something with gentler flavours. i wanted to keep the asian flavours so it was just a matter of omitting the spices and scaling everything back. the result was really delicious and if you don’t have a taste for spicy food, try this version rather than the original

roasted vegetables with semolina gnocchi

i’ve been exploring my dennis cotter book again. this time it’s his semolina gnocchi that is sending me into raptures. it’s wonderfully simple – add semolina to a pan of boiling stock, boil for 10 minutes, flavour with cheese and herbs, pour out onto a tray and cut into pieces when set, then roast on an oiled tray.

however, each time i’ve cooked it, it’s the leftover gnocchi which sits in the oven while we eat, which tastes the best. so, i think to keep practicing but i thought i’d share the recipe with you so you can practice too and maybe you’ll help me reach the stage where i can get it right first time, for my guests. having said that, a recent guest happily worked her way through the leftovers while “helping” me with the dishes!

wild garlic, gooseberries ...and me calls for a topping of artichokes, spinach and lemon cream. i prefer this version which uses slow roasted cherry tomatoes, roasted sweet potatoes (marinade in olive oil, maple syrup, soy sauce and chilli, then dress with fresh lime juice as they come out the oven), roasted onions, roasted portabello mushrooms (fill the cap with garlic, butter and white wine then roast until soft) rocket and pomegranate seeds with roast garlic and shallot raita. very delicious, especially when followed by lemon and rosewater-frosted pistachio and orange cake.

chilli and ginger sweet potato soup

the weather in london has turned wet and grey and i’m starting to think about more warming food, particularly for lunches. this soup is very filling (lots of potatoes in it) and, despite the large number of chillis in it, has only a mild kick.

lightly cooking extra chillies and ginger to be added at the end is something i often do with dals as it adds an extra layer of fresh flavours (i often add diced tomatoes too). this works really well with this soup.
