best coffee… kaffee

| Hanauer Landstraße 82 | Tues-Fri: 0730-1800; Sat/Sun: 1000-17300 | Ostend |
The coffee at Aniis is great but actually what I love most is their homemade chai, which is served in beautiful metal pots and, when you peek inside, is packed full of whole spices which add a wonderful depth of flavour to this spiced tea. If you’re planning a weekend brunch or lunch visit, to enjoy the north African-inspired food, book ahead as this little café gets busy. If Aniis is a bit far for you to visit regularly, they have bags of the coffee beans and chai blend for sale, so you can make your own at home.

Bella & Rosa
| Münchener Straße 12, Hinterhof | Mon–Fri: 1100–1800; Sat: 1100–1600 | Bahnhofsviertel |
This small coffee shop, in a courtyard just off the busy Münchener Strasse, also sells a small selection of organic fruit and vegetables as well as various speciality foods. The space inside is small but there are tables outside on a warm day and it provides quiet respite from the busyness of Bahnhofsviertel. The café is linked to Club Michel, a popular pop-up restaurant which is located at the same address.

The Holy Cross Brewing Society
| Fahrgasse 7 | Tues–Fri: 0830–1900; Sat/Sun: 1000–1900 | Innenstadt |
This relatively new café was named one of the best new cafés in Germany by Crema Magazine (November 2016). Near the Dom (cathedral) and the river, with seating inside and out this is a great place to get good quality coffee as well as tea, soft drinks and snacks. I particularly like it in the summer.

Klein und Main (pictured above)
| Moselstraße 10 | Mon–Sat: 1100–1800 | Bahnhofsviertel |
Bright and arty café in Bahnhofsviertel, with communal and smaller tables. It serves good coffee, soft and alcoholic drinks plus a decent range of sweet and savoury food. This is a where I ate a fabulously dirty Rueben sandwich which killed my hangover before it even started; richly cheesy vegetable quiches provide a similar option for veggies. They organise events via their facebook page; I just wish they opened a bit earlier. Opposite is Walon & Rosetti (Moselstrasse 15), its more formal but equally funky sister restaurant; it's sibling bar, newly opened Le Vingtneuf is a 5 minute walk away (Elbestraße 29).
