diary of a detox: getting started

hotwater.jpg

hot water with a squeeze of lemon juice – this has to be the perfect way to start the day. and according to my detox “rules”, it is the way i have to start my day!

the most important organ in the body when you are detoxing is the liver. hot water with lemon, which is slightly alkaline from the lemon juice, is a great way to kickstart your liver. it’s also an incredibly soothing and palate cleansing drink.

this is the main hot drink i have when detoxing as i’m not a fan of fruit and herbal teas. one variation i have is to stir in some honey, which as well as adding variety, is a good way to support your kidneys, which are also involved in the detoxing process. fresh mint added to hot water is a nice way to finish a meal. mint is known for its digestion-aiding qualities.

day 1

i find it easiest to start a detox at the weekend so i have time to think about what food to cook and can prepare things for the week ahead. lunch today was roasted butternut squash soup with chilli and goats cheese. the roasted butternut squash came out of the freezer and was blitzed in the blender with water. some finely chopped chilli plus the zest and juice of a lime were the final touches although i did add a piece of goat’s cheese when i was serving up, and the richness it added worked well.

for supper we had baked salmon (which had been marinaded with soy sauce, lemon juice, garlic, ginger and chilli) with brown rice and an asian fennel salad.

my energy throughout the day was fine and with leftovers from supper packed up for tomorrow’s lunch, i’m feeling good.
