hemingway’s (less) special daiquiri

the reason for this drink being "less special" is that the rum quantity is reduced by one shot per drink – we tried the original and it had a killer strength, unnecessarily so! to make this version, shake with ice 2 ½ shots light rum, 1 shot maraschino liqueur, 1 shot grapefruit juice, 1 shot lime juice, ½ shot sugar syrup. strain and serve.

black pepper martini

i love this drink – shake 50ml gin, 15ml lemon juice, 15ml sugar syrup, 5ml rose syrup and 25ml grapefruit juice. strain into a martini glass and garnish with a grind of black pepper.

salmon salad with green goddess dressing

the weather in london has turned chilly and it seems ages since we were basking in the warm summer sunshine. however, i am hopeful that sunny days will return and will enjoy recreating this bill granger recipe for salmon salad with green goddess dressing.

the original green goddess salad was, apparently, created at the palace hotel in san franciso for the british actor george arliss who was appearing in a local production of william archer's the green goddess. the classic recipe for this californian dressing are anchovies, mayonnaise, garlic, tarragon, parsley and chives.

bill granger’s recipe is lighter, focussing on herbs and watercress with a mix of mayonnaise and yoghurt. i went with an even lighter version, omitting the mayo as well. however, this is obviously a forgiving recipe and quite happy to be adapted according to whatever you have in. it’s also a great accompaniment for the rest of the salad, which has a lovely balance of flavours – the richness of the avocado and the salmon is balanced by the grapefruit and tangy dressing.

i’ve been admonished for not updating the blog since i got home. sorry – jetlag, catching up with work, investing in some quality cat time, buying a new umbrella to cope with london’s ever-present rain and dealing with a runaway garden in between rain showers have all been taking priority. plus i have a lot of photos to edit before i can share it with you!

however, to get things rolling, here is a lovely new cocktail which i discovered in tokyo – a spumoni. to make one, mix 3/4 part campari, 1 part fresh (ideally) grapefruit juice with 1 part tonic water and serve on the rocks with an orange wedge.

i don’t have a picture, hopefully my japanese blossom will do in the meantime.

mountain sipper

a friday cocktail for you, and one that is a little longer than those that we normally make – perfect for the hot sweaty weather we’re getting.

we made this fruity little number with 1 shot of freshly squeezed pink grapefruit juice, which is added to 1 shot of cranberry juice 1 shot of cointreau, 2 shots of bourbon and a dash of sugar syrup. this is shaken with ice and served over ice, with an orange zest garnish.
